Paris Saint-Germain head coach, Luis Enrique, has conceded that his side “did not deserve” their UEFA Super Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
PSG overcame a two-goal deficit thanks to late strikes from Lee Kang-in and substitute Goncalo Ramos, leveling the score at 2-2 before ultimately clinching victory 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
Tottenham had initially taken control through Mickey van de Ven’s opener, with Cristian Romero extending their lead early in the first half.
Despite this, PSG, winners of last season’s UEFA Champions League, made history by becoming the first French team to lift the UEFA Super Cup.
Enrique described the match as “crazy” and admitted the result felt almost miraculous.
“I don’t think we deserved to win,” he said. “The difference between Tottenham, who have trained a lot, and us, with only five sessions together, is huge. So this feels like a miracle.”
The Spanish coach praised PSG’s supporters for their unwavering encouragement.
“Even when we were down 1-0 and then 2-0, our fans stayed with us,” Enrique added. “I’m happy for the players, the fans, and the fact that we’ve added another trophy, even though we would have preferred more rest before the new season. It was a strange start, but we’re champions, and that’s what matters!”
