Protesters took to the streets in parts of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Wednesday, coinciding with President Bola Tinubu’s condolence visit to the state.

The demonstration occurred shortly after the President arrived at the Nigeria Air Force Base in Makurdi around 12:58 p.m.

Tinubu was in the state to commiserate with victims of a recent violent attack in Yelewata, a community in Guma Local Government Area, where over 100 lives were reportedly lost following an invasion by suspected armed herders.

President Tinubu visited the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where survivors of the incident are currently receiving treatment.

The protests, described as spontaneous by eyewitnesses, were reportedly staged near key locations in the city.

A social media user, @I_Am_Ilemona, noted on X (formerly Twitter) that one of the protest scenes appeared to be close to the Government House in Makurdi.

The protesters’ grievances and demands were not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report, but the demonstrations reflect growing public outrage over the recurring violence in the state.
