President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong directive to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, cautioning against the abuse of power and emphasizing their constitutional duty to protect citizens.

The President’s message was delivered by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the 2nd Annual Inspector-General of Police Awards in Abuja on Wednesday night.

“Be reminded that the power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service,” Tinubu stated, underscoring the need for accountability and professional conduct. He charged security personnel to “uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of every citizen, and reject all forms of misconduct and corruption.”

The President outlined his administration’s commitment to police modernization, promising continued investment in equipment, technology, training, and welfare packages.

“This administration remains steadfast in its commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police Force. We understand that modern policing demands modern tools, continuous training, intelligence-led strategies, and community partnerships,” he affirmed.

Tinubu praised award recipients as exemplars of excellence, urging them to maintain high standards. “To our award recipients, I congratulate you warmly. You have made the nation proud. But I urge you; do not rest on your laurels. Let this recognition inspire greater professionalism, hard work, and integrity within the Force.”

He stressed that Nigerians deserve a police service that is “responsive, responsible, and respected,” noting its critical role in maintaining public trust.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun addressed evolving security challenges, including cybercrime and terrorism, calling for adaptive policing methods.

“The future of policing in Nigeria must be smarter, faster, more trusted, and unapologetically people-focused,” he declared. The police chief emphasized community relations as pivotal, stating, “Without legitimacy, there is no effectiveness.”

Egbetokun highlighted interagency cooperation, noting, “No single agency can secure Nigeria in isolation.” He reassured citizens: “We are your sentinels—not perfect, but resolute; not without flaws, but without fear. Your safety is our mission. Your trust is our shield.”

The awards ceremony recognized officers for exceptional service through a transparent selection process. Distinguished attendees included Police Affairs Minister Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, service chiefs, and former police inspectors-general.
