Police uncover explosives in Akwa Ibom custodial centre

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of explosive devices within the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, describing the development as one that prevented a potential disaster.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, who issued a statement in Uyo, the operation followed credible intelligence supplied by correctional authorities after suspicious items were noticed around the facility.

She explained that, acting on the report, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, directed the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, along with other tactical teams to secure the area.

A coordinated search of the premises later led to the discovery of two 90 mm high explosive rounds, as well as a 45 cm length of burning fuse.

“The EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, thereby neutralising any imminent threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure.

“The command has reinforced security around the correctional facility and its environs, with increased surveillance, access control, and continuous patrols to deter any further threats.

“Discreet investigation and technical analysis have commenced to determine the origin of the explosives and to apprehend those connected to the dangerous act,” she said.
