Police rescue 75-year-old kidnap victim, arrest suspect in Kano

In a decisive crackdown on violent crime, the Kano State Police Command has successfully rescued a 75-year-old man, Abdulrahman Yunusa, who was abducted from his home in Maigana, Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The operation also led to the arrest of a suspected kidnapper.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed that the tactical operation was executed based on “foolproof intelligence” under the directive of the Commissioner of Police.

The raid targeted a hideout believed to be operated by a kidnap syndicate in Bagau Town, located within Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State.

“Acting on foolproof intelligence, the Commissioner of Police directed the tactical teams led by the officer in charge of the Command’s Anti-kidnapping Squad, for a raid operation on suspected kidnap syndicate’s hideout at Bagau Town, Bebeji Local Government Area, Kano State,” Kiyawa said.

During the operation on May 9, 2025, 23-year-old Musa Tukur, a native of Kudan Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was found guarding the victim, who had been blindfolded and restrained with ropes.

The suspect reportedly admitted to participating in the abduction, revealing that the victim was kidnapped from his home on May 3, 2025, around 12:30 p.m., and held for a ransom demand of N20 million.

“The suspect confessed to conspiring with his accomplices to kidnap the victim from his residence on 3rd May 2025 at about 12:30 pm and holding him hostage for a ransom of twenty million naira (N20,000,000:00),” he stated.

After his rescue, the elderly victim was promptly taken to a medical facility where he received treatment, was discharged, and has since been reunited with his family.

In a show of gratitude, jubilant residents of Soba LGA flocked to the Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano to celebrate the police’s efforts and express their appreciation.

“On hearing about the rescue of the kidnap victim by the Kano State Police Command, members of his community from Soba LGA, Kaduna State stormed Bompai Police Headquarters Kano in jubilations, pouring encomiums on the Commissioner of Police and the Command, for the efforts and the success recorded,” Kiyawa added.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, commended the team for their professionalism and acknowledged the vital role of public collaboration in the fight against criminal activity.

Kiyawa noted, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and appreciated the support of the public in assisting the police with credible information in combating crime and criminalities in the state.”
