Police receive 50,000 new constables for training

The Police Service Commission has officially transferred 50,000 newly recruited police constables to the Nigeria Police Force for training, marking another stage in the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen national security.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the commission’s spokesperson, Torty Kalu, the handover ceremony was led by Commissioner I of the PSC, retired Justice Paul Galumje.

The Punch reported that the commission said the recruitment exercise was carried out in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu and in accordance with relevant legal provisions.

During the ceremony, Galumje appreciated the President for supporting the recruitment exercise and formally presented the successful candidates to the Nigeria Police Force for training at designated police colleges and other approved institutions.

He also handed over the complete list of successful applicants, stored on a flash drive, to the police authorities.

Representing the Inspector-General of Police, the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Training and Development Department, Isyaku Mohammed, praised the commission for conducting what he described as a transparent recruitment process.

He assured that the recruits would begin training simultaneously across the country once the necessary funding was made available.

“The training will commence nationwide as soon as funds are released,” Mohammed said.

The Secretary to the PSC, Onyemuche Nnamani, credited the successful completion of the exercise to the cooperation among all stakeholders involved.

He expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the process demonstrated effective collaboration and teamwork.

President Tinubu had on November 26, 2025, declared a nationwide security emergency and directed the recruitment of 50,000 additional police officers to strengthen the country’s response to growing security challenges.

The recruitment exercise, which lasted about seven months, is expected to increase the operational strength of the Nigeria Police Force after the new constables complete their training and are deployed nationwide.
