A teenager, identified only as DMX, was allegedly shot dead by a yet-to-be-identified policeman in the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday following an altercation between the officer and the victim.
A source familiar with the matter told The PUNCH on Wednesday that the disagreement escalated, prompting the officer to fire at the teenager, hitting him in the leg.
“DMX had an issue with a police officer. The altercation escalated, and the officer shot him in the leg. His friends were alerted, and they came and rushed him to the hospital. The teenager had already lost a significant amount of blood before receiving medical attention,” the source narrated.
The incident gained public attention after an X user, @Sturbyrich65562, raised alarm online, insisting that DMX did not physically confront the officer.
“Naija police killed one of my area gees. Though he’s a member of the Eiye confraternity, he did not fight the policeman. He was shot in Ibadan. I think the policeman was trigger-happy based on what I heard,” the user posted, tagging anti-cultism advocacy group Naija Confra.
Naija Confra, in a separate post on Tuesday, corroborated claims that the teenager suffered from delayed medical intervention.
“He was rushed to the hospital alive, and payment was made for blood as he was already losing a lot of blood. However, his friends claim that delays and negligence from the hospital, even after payment, contributed to his death,” the group stated.
The platform also revealed that DMX’s father is reportedly a high-ranking police officer.
Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Oyefeso, for comment were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages sent to his phone went unanswered.
This incident adds to growing concerns about the conduct of security personnel, particularly regarding the use of excessive force.
In August, The PUNCH reported the shooting death of a motorcycle rider, Muazu, in the Onosa community of Elemoro, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
