The Niger State Police Command has arrested two men suspected of attempting to kidnap a young woman in Minna, the state capital.

The suspects were apprehended with a cache of weapons, including a locally made pistol.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday in Minna by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, the suspects were captured by officers from the Tafa Division after receiving a distress call on June 13 around 8 p.m.

The duo, aged 28 and 30, reportedly invaded the residence of their target in Kata, a community near New-Bwari, where they attempted to abduct the victim’s sister.

“The police operatives of Tafa Division were immediately contacted and were able to arrest the suspects on getting to the scene,” Abiodun said.

Upon their arrest, the officers recovered an assortment of dangerous items from the suspects, including a locally fabricated pistol, two knives, two electric tasers, a walkie-talkie, two cartridges, four mobile phones, a pepper spray, one ATM card, and some charms.

“During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, explaining that they wanted to abduct the lady in order to request ransom,” he added.

“They also claimed that the items recovered were bought from one of their members under the disguise of civilian JTF,” Abiodun further revealed.

He confirmed that the suspects are undergoing further investigations and will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigations Department for continued probing and prosecution.
