Officers of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended a couple and another woman for allegedly being in unlawful possession of a semi-automatic pistol in the Ipaja area of the state.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects were intercepted by police operatives during a routine patrol.
A subsequent search of their belongings led to the discovery of the weapon.
Speaking via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Hundeyin explained that the officers had carried out a “non-intrusive” search to avoid any claims of misconduct or harassment.
He noted, “The narrative could have easily been, ‘See these police officers harassing two ladies, insisting on searching their bags…’ But after a cursory check, this semi-automatic pistol was found in their possession.”
Further investigations revealed that one of the arrested women is the wife of the firearm’s owner. She reportedly led the police to her husband, who was later arrested in connection with the case.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiries,” Hundeyin added. “This is one less illegal firearm off the streets. #LagosPoliceNG remains committed to the safety of all.”
At the time of reporting, the names of the suspects had not been disclosed. The police are continuing investigations to trace the origin of the weapon and the suspects’ motive for possessing it.
Hundeyin reassured Lagosians of the command’s commitment to public safety and encouraged the public to cooperate with officers during security operations.
“We will continue to act lawfully and responsibly. The public should not be quick to misjudge our actions,” he said.
