The Enugu State Police Command has arrested four suspected drug peddlers in separate intelligence-led operations across the state, recovering substances believed to be cannabis and hard drugs, as well as ₦1.8 million in cash.
The suspects were arrested by operatives of the Command’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team and the Anti-Cultism Squad during coordinated raids aimed at dismantling drug distribution networks within the Enugu metropolis.
Confirming the development in a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said the operations were part of ongoing efforts to curb drug-related crimes and other criminal activities in the state.
According to him, SWAT operatives, acting on credible intelligence, raided a criminal hideout behind New Market, Enugu, at about 11:30 a.m. on January 26, 2026, where a 46-year-old woman, Omeru Nkechi, was arrested.
“Items recovered from the suspect include a large bag containing a substance suspected to be Indian hemp, a POS machine, two ATM cards, a water-pumping machine, rolls of electric wires, assorted off-cut wires, and a cash sum of ₦1.8 million,” Ndukwe said.
In a related operation, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Squad, while on routine crime-prevention patrol on January 25, 2026, stormed identified black spots in Obeagu, Asata, and the Holy Ghost Railway Area following actionable intelligence.
Three male suspects — Anielozie Emmanuel (21), Ekoh Miracle (20), and Nwachukwu Michael (27) — were arrested during the operation. Police said one of the suspects is believed to be affiliated with the Vikings Confraternity.
“Recovered from the suspects were 32 small containers and one sachet containing substances suspected to be cannabis, as well as 12 wrapped pills believed to be hard drugs,” the police spokesperson added.
Ndukwe noted that investigations are ongoing to trace and arrest other members of the drug-peddling networks linked to the suspects.
Reacting to the arrests, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the Command’s determination to combat drug abuse, cultism, and other forms of criminality.
“He reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to sustaining the fight against drug abuse and cult-related activities and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to the police,” the statement said.
The police described the arrests as part of renewed efforts to rid Enugu State of criminal elements and enhance public safety.
