Police intensify security in Lagos schools, worship centres

The Lagos State Police Command has intensified security measures across schools, worship centres, and major public spaces to prevent potential threats during the festive season and the upcoming New Year.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh revealed this on Monday while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja.

Jimoh assured residents of their safety, noting that the increased deployment of officers is a proactive effort to strengthen public confidence amid recent security challenges in parts of the country.

“We want the general public to know that Lagos is safe and secure. We have made additional deployments to all schools, places of worship, religious centres and other locations frequently visited by people to ensure all worshippers are safe. This will continue into the New Year and beyond to ensure the safety of all Lagosians and other Nigerians coming into the state,” the CP said.

He emphasized that there is “no cause for alarm” and explained that the command is enhancing security across the state while deploying more tactical teams to local government areas.

The move comes as concerns rise following recent abductions in states including Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger.

At the briefing, Jimoh also sounded a warning about a spike in vehicle thefts involving newly hired drivers and car wash attendants.

According to him, the command has recovered 10 luxury vehicles and arrested 56 suspects for crimes ranging from robbery to vehicle theft.

“These vehicles are mostly those taken away by drivers who were just employed. We equally have instances where vehicles taken to a car wash were driven away by attendants,” he explained.

Among the recovered vehicles were a Toyota Hilux, Range Rover SUV, Land Cruiser, Lexus GX460, and a motorcycle reportedly used in a robbery attempt.

The police also showcased weapons seized in recent operations, including locally made pistols, a cut-to-size shotgun, cartridges, and a machete.

Jimoh urged residents to adopt stricter personal security measures, advising, “We should be more security conscious,” and warning motorists not to leave their keys with strangers or newly hired workers.
