The Borno State Police Command has averted what could have been a deadly explosion after operatives recovered and safely detonated an improvised explosive device planted close to an internally displaced persons camp in Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of the state.
Spokesperson for the command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday, describing the device as “victim-operated.”
“On 18th August 2025, at about 4:30pm, the Divisional Police Officer, Mallam Fatori, received credible intelligence regarding a suspected explosive device in the community,” Daso explained.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, immediately deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) team from Base 13 in Maiduguri to the site.
“In accordance with standard safety protocols, the area was cordoned off and searched. The buried IED was located, evacuated to a safe location, and professionally demolished without any loss of life or damage to property,” the police said.
Daso noted that residents of the area were sensitised on precautionary measures following the incident, and surveillance has been intensified to prevent future threats.
The latest discovery came less than 24 hours after police successfully defused another explosive device planted on a farm in Dikwa Local Government Area.
Reiterating the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, the police urged members of the public to remain vigilant.
“We strongly advise residents to promptly report any suspicious objects or persons to the nearest police station,” the statement emphasised.
