Police council confirms Disu as substantive IG

The Nigeria Police Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.

The confirmation was announced by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following a brief council meeting held on Monday at the State House, Abuja.

“Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP,” Onanuga told PUNCH Online after the 40-minute session.

Monday’s meeting commenced around 2:15 p.m. upon the President’s arrival at the Council Chamber.

The gathering was convened in line with the Police Act 2020, which mandates the council to review and approve the appointment of an Inspector-General.

The development follows last Tuesday’s resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

At the time, the Presidency had already indicated that the Police Council would soon meet to formally consider Disu’s elevation.

In the earlier statement, Onanuga explained, “In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.”

Disu, 59, has been operating in an acting capacity since Wednesday, following Egbetokun’s departure. Though Egbetokun cited “family issues” in his resignation, reports indicated he was summoned to the Presidential Villa and informed that he needed to step aside.
