The Nigeria Police Force has expressed strong disapproval of what it described as an “unprovoked and dangerous assault” on its operatives in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025, at Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police disclosed that officers attached to the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) were ambushed while transiting from Lagos through Edo State.
Adejobi stated, “The officers were met with a hostile mob shortly after passing the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis. The group had blocked the road and proceeded to launch a violent attack using stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects. Two officers sustained serious injuries.”
Despite the life-threatening situation, the police commended the attacked officers for maintaining professional conduct and choosing not to retaliate with force.
“Their restraint in the face of extreme provocation is a testament to the discipline and professionalism we continue to instill in our personnel,” Adejobi added, noting that the wounded officers are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
The Police Force warned that acts of lawlessness and aggression against its officers would not be tolerated and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.
“Those responsible will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement emphasized.
IGP orders full investigation into Oyo teen’s death
In a separate but equally tragic incident, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered an in-depth investigation into the death of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, in Oyo State.
The incident reportedly involved operatives from the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority.
The IGP condemned the act, describing the boy’s death as “a painful and unacceptable loss of young life.” He confirmed that the officer allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting has been arrested and is in custody.
“We are committed to transparency,” the IGP said. “The investigation will be thorough, and the findings will be made public to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done.”
He also extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, assuring them that the Nigeria Police remains devoted to protecting lives and maintaining law and order.
The Force urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and to seek redress through lawful channels.
“We call on citizens to support our efforts to build a safe and just society. Violence against officers or anyone else only undermines that mission,” Adejobi noted.
