The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the explosion recorded in the Mushin area of the state was caused by a mechanical fault and not by any form of explosive device or criminal activity.
The command disclosed this in a statement, signed by its spokesperson, SP Ademola Adebisi, posted on its official X handle on Thursday, following the conclusion of a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
According to the police, forensic and technical examinations found no evidence suggesting terrorism, sabotage, or the deployment of an Improvised Explosive Device.
“Investigation has conclusively established that the incident was not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), terrorist activity, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives,” the statement said.
The police explained that experts found no traces of explosive substances, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast patterns typically associated with bomb attacks.
Rather, investigators determined that the explosion resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component situated outside the affected vehicle.
“The incident has been professionally classified as a Mechanical Explosion,” the command stated.
According to the findings, the sudden failure triggered an abrupt release of energy, shattering the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle and causing minor injuries to the occupant.
The command reiterated that there was no indication of foul play, stressing that the incident was purely mechanical in nature.
