The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of vigilante members accused of brutalising and stripping a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, at her lodge in Awka.
In a now-viral video, the armed operatives were seen invading the corps members’ residence, accusing them of involvement in internet fraud despite identifying themselves with NYSC uniforms and IDs. The footage captured the moment the officers repeatedly slapped and beat Elobor, tearing her clothes in the process, while she cried and pleaded for mercy.
The disturbing incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with Nigerians demanding swift justice and accusing the local security outfit of abuse of power.
Spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, who issued a statement on Tuesday, said the suspects had been identified and taken into custody, although investigations had encountered a setback due to the victim’s unavailability.
“The Command wishes to inform the public that the suspects have been arrested. However, the alleged victim’s failure to present herself has temporarily slowed down the investigation,” the statement read.
He added that the Command would not tolerate any form of brutality or misconduct from vigilante groups operating under its jurisdiction.
“Assault in any form is a criminal offence under Nigerian law,” Ikenga warned. “The Command is committed to ensuring justice and is prepared to take necessary legal steps to aid the court process while awaiting the cooperation of the victim.”
Ikenga also assured NYSC members serving across the state of the police’s commitment to their safety, urging them to promptly report any cases of harassment, intimidation or abuse.
“The safety of corps members remains a priority. We encourage them to report such incidents immediately for quick intervention,” he said.
Meanwhile, the video has continued to attract condemnation, with many Nigerians calling for a comprehensive probe and stricter oversight of vigilante operations in the state.
