The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested the leader of a popular masquerade group, known locally as “Ekpo,” over allegations of extortion, assault, and disrupting public order.
The suspect, identified as Uwem Umanah, 45, was taken into custody after officers responded to a distress call reporting that members of the cultural group were allegedly attacking residents and blocking a public road while demanding money from passersby.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday in Uyo.
She said the group was found armed with machetes, sticks, spears, and other weapons, and had reportedly assaulted several people, including National Youth Service Corps members.
“The Command acted immediately on a distress call about an illegal masquerade procession. The group was said to be harassing citizens, blocking a major route, and extorting money,” DSP John stated.
“Investigation revealed that the leader of the ‘Ekpo’ group authorised the public display despite an existing ban. He and one other suspect have been arrested and charged.”
Another man, David Michael, 34, was also arrested in Ukana Onuk community while allegedly preparing to stage a similar masquerade outing. Police said he was caught with full masquerade regalia.
Following investigations, both suspects have been arraigned in court.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, warned that the command will not tolerate the use of cultural traditions as a cover for criminal activity.
“While we respect cultural heritage, no individual or group will be allowed to hide under tradition to commit crime or disturb public peace,” he said.
“We urge residents to continue providing credible information that can help prevent crime and keep communities safe.”
