Police arrest 55-year-old over murder in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old man, Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon”, over his alleged involvement in two separate violent crimes that left one person dead and another critically injured on Lagos Island.

Police spokesperson, DSP Bababseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday, noting that Oladiti is currently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba.

According to the statement, the first incident occurred on September 17, 2025, when the suspect allegedly assaulted a dispatch rider with a helmet and his fists.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was placed on oxygen.

The following day, police received another complaint linking Oladiti to an earlier altercation on August 28, 2025.

In that case, he was accused of striking a man multiple times with a metallic ring on the head and face. Despite receiving treatment, the victim succumbed to his injuries on September 17 and was later confirmed dead by doctors. His remains have been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

News of the victim’s death sparked a violent protest at Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, on Thursday. Sympathizers of the deceased reportedly stormed Oladiti’s office, set two of his motorcycles ablaze, and caused panic in the area.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, led a team of mobile policemen, conventional officers, and tactical squads to the scene to restore order.

“Calm has been restored and we want to assure residents that the suspect is in custody. He will be prosecuted once investigations are completed,” CP Jimoh said while addressing reporters.

He appealed to Lagosians to avoid jungle justice and allow the law to take its course.

“We understand the grief and anger of the people, but no one should take the law into their own hands. Justice will be diligently pursued in this matter,” the police commissioner added.

The Lagos Police Command further urged members of the public to cooperate with investigators and remain law-abiding as the case progresses.
