Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested an 18-year-old suspect for allegedly vandalising reflective road safety equipment installed on the Third Mainland Bridge.
The suspect, identified as Dogara John, was reportedly apprehended on April 6, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. after he was allegedly caught tampering with road studs designed to improve visibility and guide motorists, especially at night and during adverse weather conditions.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, officers recovered 20 of the reflective studs from the suspect at the scene of arrest.
The police said the installations are essential to road safety on the busy bridge, noting that they help reduce accidents and improve lane guidance for drivers.
“These reflective road studs are critical safety installations that assist motorists in navigating safely, particularly on a high-traffic route like the Third Mainland Bridge,” the statement said.
The command also condemned the act of vandalism, warning that destruction of public infrastructure poses serious risks to human life and undermines government safety efforts.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated the command’s firm stance against such behaviour.
“The Commissioner of Police has maintained zero tolerance for vandalism and all forms of destruction of public infrastructure across Lagos State,” SP Adebisi said.
She added that the police chief stressed the importance of public cooperation in safeguarding infrastructure, noting that such acts could lead to avoidable accidents and loss of lives.
“He emphasised that acts like this not only endanger lives but also weaken ongoing efforts to ensure safety and order in the state,” the statement added.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public infrastructure as investigations into the incident continue.
