A significant deployment of security personnel, particularly officers from the Area F Division of the Nigeria Police Force, was visible on Thursday around the Ikeja underbridge in Lagos, where groups of protesters were starting to converge in commemoration of June 12 Democracy Day.
Among those gathering were civil society organisations and pro-democracy campaigners, united in their intent to raise alarm over the deepening economic hardship and escalating insecurity under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
Although the demonstration had yet to formally begin at the time this report was filed, law enforcement agents maintained a heightened state of vigilance.
