The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has raised alarms over Nigeria’s shift toward a one-party state, with the ruling All Progressives Congress increasingly dominating more states as the 2027 general elections approach.
Despite these concerns, the PDP has vowed to push back against the APC’s efforts to consolidate power and ensure a pluralistic political landscape.
This declaration was made by the PDP National Woman Leader, Hajiya Amina Darosimi, during a “thank you” visit to the Atan Offot, Uyo office of the party. The visit was attended by the governor and party leader, Umo Eno, along with Akwa Ibom state PDP executives, supporters, and stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the PDP National Working Committee, Darosimi praised Governor Eno’s administration for its developmental achievements over the past 19 months.
She commended the governor’s leadership, noting that the party is proud of the strides made under his governance. Darosimi assured that the PDP is fully committed to resisting any attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, asserting that the party remains a viable opposition force in the country. She also pledged the PDP’s support to ensure that Governor Eno secures a second term in office, furthering the party’s agenda in the state.
In his response, Governor Eno expressed gratitude to the party for its continuous support, highlighting how the party’s structures have contributed to the success of his administration since his inauguration on May 29, 2023. He emphasized that his visit was a reflection of the longstanding tradition of party leaders acknowledging the party’s role in their leadership. Governor Eno reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development, emphasizing that his administration will continue to focus on reaching rural communities to sustain its popularity.
The governor also announced plans to begin a tour of federal constituencies for town hall meetings, encouraging stakeholders to collaborate and define key initiatives ahead of the meetings. He revealed that empowerment schemes would be part of the town hall agenda across the 31 local government areas, targeting farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs to boost local economies.
Furthermore, Governor Eno urged party members who have held governmental positions to strengthen their relationships with their constituencies, stressing that such efforts would enhance their political capital and benefit the party’s long-term success.
In a final note, the PDP state chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan, thanked the governor for his new year visit and ongoing support for the party. He also conveyed the party’s resolution to endorse Pastor Umo Eno as the sole gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 election in Akwa Ibom State.
