The Peoples Democratic Party has established a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s operations in the South-South geopolitical zone.
The party’s National Working Committee announced that the committee will begin its duties on Monday, March 10, 2025, in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
This move follows the NWC’s decision to nullify the results of the recent South-South zonal congress that produced a Dan Orbih-led zonal executive. The NWC had earlier suspended Orbih as the national vice chairman (South-South) in 2024 due to actions and statements that were deemed inconsistent with the PDP’s stance ahead of the 2024 Edo State governorship election.
On Friday, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, explained that the NWC formed the zonal caretaker committee to fill the leadership gap and ensure the smooth operation of the party’s affairs in the South-South zone after the expiration of the current Zonal Executives’ tenure on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
The members of the newly formed South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee include Bro. Emma Ogidi (Chairman), Hon. Nicholas Ayuwa, Barr. Godwin Akpan Udonta, Mrs. Bekewei Ashanti, Idehen Ebomoyi, Dame Vivian Ahanmisi, and Chief Damiete Herbert-Miller (Secretary).
According to the statement, the committee will oversee the zone’s activities for three months or until a new Zonal Executive is elected, in accordance with the PDP Constitution. Ologunagba further urged all party leaders, stakeholders, and members in the South-South zone to adhere to this decision and continue working collaboratively for the benefit of the party.
“The South South Zonal Caretaker Committee is to oversee the activities of the Party in the Zone for a period of three month or until when a new Zonal Executive is elected in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP.
“The NWC enjoins all Party leaders, critical stakeholders and members of the PDP in the South South Zone to be guided by this and continue to work together in the overall interest of the Party in the Zone,” Ologunagba stated.
