A member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Waziri, has formally resigned from the party and declared for the African Democratic Congress.
Waziri, who is also one of the founding members of the PDP, made his exit known on Monday at the Dogo Tebo Ward Centre in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State. He explained that his decision was driven by considerations of national interest and the urgent need to restore democratic values in Nigeria.
Speaking during the event, Waziri said his resignation was in line with the provisions of the PDP constitution, which requires that any withdrawal of membership must be formalised at the ward level.
“I was a member of PDP, and due to the exigencies of the moment and in the interest of the nation, I have decided to resign,” Waziri said.
“The PDP constitution demands that I come to my ward centre to formalise this action,” he added.
Waziri described his decision to leave the PDP as “difficult but necessary,” noting that the party’s current leadership and general direction no longer reflected the ideals of a credible opposition party. He stressed the need to reinvigorate Nigeria’s democratic institutions through a new political platform.
He further appealed to his political allies, whom he described as “my boys,” to join him in the quest to build a vibrant democracy and ensure the delivery of good governance to Nigerians.
In response to Waziri’s announcement, the PDP Ward Chairman, represented by Malam Muhammad Bomai, accepted the resignation “with deep regret,” describing Waziri as both a national figure and a pillar of the party whose departure would be profoundly felt.
“On behalf of the party, we accept his resignation with a heavy heart. Waziri has been an institution within the PDP, and we will feel his absence deeply,” Bomai said.
After accepting Waziri’s membership card, Bomai went on to announce his own resignation from the PDP and declared his immediate defection to the ADC. He said his decision was motivated by a shared vision with Waziri for Nigeria’s political future.
