PAOK stun Lille in seven-goal Europa League thriller

Lille’s flawless start to the Europa League campaign came to a dramatic halt after they suffered a 4-3 defeat to 10-man PAOK, while Lyon extended their perfect run with a 2-0 win over Basel.

The French hosts endured a nightmare first half as Soualiho Meite, Andrija Zivkovic, and Giannis Konstantelias fired PAOK into a 3-0 lead before the break.

Lille mounted a spirited comeback early in the second half through Benjamin Andre and Hamza Igamane, only for Zivkovic, who had missed a penalty moments earlier, to strike again and restore PAOK’s two-goal cushion.

Igamane’s second of the night set up a tense finale, and Andre thought he had salvaged a late draw with a stoppage-time equalizer, but VAR ruled it out for a foul in the build-up.

The thrilling contest ended with Tomasz Kedziora sent off deep into stoppage time, yet PAOK held firm to claim a famous win.

Elsewhere, Lyon maintained their 100% record in the competition, cruising past Basel.

Captain Corentin Tolisso opened the scoring inside three minutes, and Afonso Moreira sealed the victory with a late strike, ensuring the Ligue 1 side joined Midtjylland and Braga as the only teams with three wins from three matches.

In Rome, Viktoria Plzen stunned José Mourinho’s men 2-1, capitalizing on rare chances with goals from Prince Adu and Cheick Souare inside two minutes of the first half.

Although Paulo Dybala pulled one back from the spot, Roma couldn’t make their 20 attempts count, falling victim to Plzen’s ruthless efficiency, two goals from just 0.16 expected goals (xG).

PAOK’s win marked the first-ever victory by a Greek side over French opposition in Europa League history.

French teams had previously dominated the matchup, winning all nine encounters while scoring at least twice in each.

It was also Lille’s first home defeat in the group stages of a major European competition, ending a 14-match unbeaten run that included eight consecutive wins.
