The Oyo State Government has approved a compensation package worth ₦4.5 billion for victims and survivors of the devastating Bodija explosion that rocked the state capital on January 16, 2024.

The announcement was made during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed that the financial support is separate from the over ₦200 million previously spent by the state on emergency interventions such as hospital care, temporary shelter, feeding, and security for affected residents.

“This fund is a continuation of the state’s efforts to ease the pain of the victims and demonstrate the government’s commitment to justice and recovery,” Oyelade said.

In addition, the Council endorsed the recommendations of a 10-member committee to revoke the titles of two properties located near Adeyi Avenue, where the blast occurred. According to the government, a memorial monument will be erected on the site to honour those who lost their lives.

“The decision to revoke the property titles is based on public interest. The state will also build a monument on the affected land to serve as a remembrance for the victims,” Oyelade explained.

The Council also criticized recent misinformation by individuals claiming to represent affected residents, describing their statements as misleading and unfair.

“These unfounded allegations are not only unfair but also mischievous. The government remains focused on doing what is right, regardless of distractions,” Oyelade stated.

He further revealed that some potential beneficiaries are entangled in family disagreements, which the committee is working to resolve carefully.

On rebuilding efforts, Oyelade noted that property owners around the explosion site—commonly referred to as “ground zero”—will be allowed to reconstruct their homes following professional assessments by government-engaged structural engineers.

On the matter of justice, the Commissioner confirmed that prosecutions of arrested suspects are ongoing, while efforts are being intensified to apprehend others still at large.

“The Ministry of Justice will ensure diligent prosecution of those already in court, and we are committed to tracking down other suspects connected to the incident,” he affirmed.

Meanwhile, Governor Seyi Makinde, during the closed-door session, addressed rumours of a cabinet reshuffle, emphasizing that the changes are not punitive but strategic.

“The reshuffling is to discourage complacency and boost performance across ministries. No one will be removed unless found to be unfocused or uncommitted,” the governor reportedly said, adding that his goal is to conclude his administration in 2027 with the same vigor it began in 2019.
