Oyo cyclist sets sights on Guinness World record

The Oyo State Government has thrown its weight behind a bold initiative led by Ibadan-based female biker and philanthropist, Ebaide Joy, as she prepares to embark on a solo motorcycle expedition across 12 African countries in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Toyin Balogun, announced the government’s support on Monday, stating that the journey — slated to begin in July — aligns with the state’s agenda of empowering vulnerable groups and amplifying women’s voices globally.

“This is more than just a record-breaking adventure. It is a mission rooted in purpose — one that speaks to courage, resilience, and the drive to break glass ceilings for women, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds,” Balogun said.

Ebaide is aiming to surpass the current Guinness World Record for the longest solo motorcycle ride by a woman, which stands at 30,000 kilometres. Beyond this physical feat, the project includes a social empowerment campaign that will provide vocational training for 18 orphaned girls in Nigeria.

“These girls, just like Ebaide herself, were raised in orphanages. This initiative not only gives them hope but equips them with practical skills in tailoring, hairdressing, and catering,” the commissioner noted.

“With Governor Seyi Makinde’s full support, we will back this project by providing startup grants and equipment to ensure they lead sustainable lives after training.”

Ebaide, who mounts a camera on her motorcycle to document her experiences, said her journey is about much more than mileage.

“This isn’t just about setting a record,” she explained. “It’s about rewriting the stories of girls who have been overlooked. I understand their struggles — I grew up as an orphan too. So for me, this ride is about breaking the cycle of poverty through empowerment.”

The journey, which will span three months, will also feature storytelling from across African communities, highlighting resilience, shared humanity, and transformation. Upon her return, a graduation ceremony will be held for the 18 trainees, marking a significant milestone in their lives.

Commissioner Balogun described Ebaide’s work as deeply aligned with the ministry’s vision: “She represents what we stand for — sustainable empowerment and inclusive progress. We are proud to support her.
