French authorities have launched an urgent investigation after at least 145 people reported being pricked by needles during the annual Fête de la Musique held nationwide on Saturday.
According to ABC News, most of those affected were women, with incidents reported in various cities and towns where crowds had gathered to enjoy live music performances.
The French national police confirmed on Monday night that 14 individuals had been taken into custody in connection with the suspected syringe attacks.
“These assaults were carried out in crowded areas. Most victims did not see who attacked them but reported being pricked in the arm or back,” a police spokesperson said in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The victims described a range of symptoms following the attacks, including dizziness, sudden hot flushes, temporary loss of consciousness, and in some cases, bruising or visible puncture marks.
While some were treated on the spot by medical personnel, others were hospitalized and provided blood, saliva, and urine samples for toxicological analysis. As of now, it remains unclear whether any harmful substances were detected in those tests.
Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious during upcoming public events. “Anyone who experiences unusual symptoms in a crowd should immediately seek medical assistance and report to the nearest police unit,” the spokesperson added.
The incidents come on the heels of a social media warning issued by a prominent feminist influencer, who had alerted women to potential threats of needle attacks ahead of the festival. Her post gained traction just hours before the event began.
French police continue to investigate the motive behind the attacks and are working to determine whether there is a coordinated effort or multiple isolated incidents. They have encouraged any additional victims or witnesses to come forward.
