Over 1,150 Nigerians studied in France says, French Ambassador

The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, has revealed that more than 1,150 Nigerians have pursued higher education in France, many of whom are making significant impacts across various sectors, including innovation, sustainability, and the creative industry.

According to The PUNCH, Ambassador Fonbaustier made this known during a cocktail event held in Abuja on Thursday to commemorate France Alumni Day, an annual event celebrating international graduates from French institutions.

The evening showcased the achievements of Nigerian alumni who have excelled in various fields, including fashion, art, environmental advocacy, and French cuisine.

“You’ll be surprised to know that approximately 1,150 Nigerians have studied in France over the years,” Fonbaustier said.

“Some have returned to contribute meaningfully to national development, while others have remained in France, working under professional contracts. What is clear is that they’re all making a difference.”

The envoy praised the entrepreneurial drive of young Nigerians who, after studying in France, returned to establish impactful ventures that address social and environmental issues.

“In a nutshell, we have young Nigerians who studied in France and came back to launch businesses, contribute to national development, and accomplish their destiny,” he noted.

A key moment at the event was the recognition of 17 Nigerian alumni who developed an innovative plastic recycling project. The initiative, which transforms waste into useful products, was described as a model for sustainable practices and cross-cultural knowledge exchange.

“These alumni are part of a larger effort to combat plastic waste. Their project shows how innovation and knowledge transfer can thrive across borders,” the ambassador stated. “It reflects the diversity and inclusiveness of the France Alumni network and the rich cultural tapestry of Nigeria.”

He also pointed out that many of the alumni are based in Lagos and the southern part of the country, attributing this to the higher availability of employment opportunities and the concentration of businesses in those regions.
