French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Wednesday that only Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has the authority to negotiate any territorial agreements with Russia in efforts to end Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

“Territorial questions concerning Ukraine can be, and will be, negotiated only by the Ukrainian president,” Macron told reporters following a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Macron revealed that Trump, during his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, would push for a ceasefire in Ukraine. The French leader described this objective as “very important” and said it had “our support.”

Additionally, Macron noted that Trump would seek to arrange a future trilateral meeting involving Putin and Zelensky. He expressed hope that such talks could take place in Europe, specifically in “a neutral country that is acceptable to all parties.”

The French president also clarified that there are currently “no serious land swap proposals” under consideration. His remarks reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty in determining any potential territorial resolutions to the conflict.
