The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has reported a tragic accident involving a Mercedes-Benz SUV driver who fled the scene after a fatal collision with a tricycle operator along the Badagry Expressway.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki confirmed the incident in a Sunday statement issued by Director of Public Affairs Taofiq Adebayo. The crash occurred at Origan, Oko-Afo, when the SUV with custom plate “OSUNFNKE” drove one-way from Ile-Epo towards Oko-Afo, violating traffic laws and colliding head-on with tricycle MUS 716 QM.
Preliminary investigations revealed the tricycle operator sustained fatal injuries, including a dislocated knee, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Bakare-Oki condemned the SUV driver’s actions, stating: “In a shocking act of negligence, the SUV driver abandoned both his vehicle and the victim’s body and fled the scene.”
LASTMA officials immediately secured the area and involved the Morogbo Police Division, while FRSC personnel transported the deceased to Badagry General Hospital mortuary. The damaged vehicles were removed by LASTMA and handed to police for investigation.
“This death highlights the deadly consequences of traffic lawlessness,” Bakare-Oki said, expressing grief over the preventable tragedy. He emphasized that despite ongoing public awareness campaigns, some motorists continue endangering lives through reckless driving.
The General Manager reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to road safety through enforcement and education, stating: “This tragedy could’ve been avoided had the driver obeyed traffic signs and regulations.” He extended condolences to the victim’s family and urged all road users to prioritize safety, warning against dangerous practices like one-way driving that jeopardize public welfare.
