The Federal Road Safety Corps Ondo State Command has disclosed that its operatives apprehended 15,145 traffic offenders between January and July 2024.

The State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, revealed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Akure.

Ibitoye stated that the offenders committed 15,536 traffic violations during the period. He listed the infractions to include seatbelt violations, riding motorcycles without crash helmets, improper number plates, speeding, overloading vehicles, and using phones while driving.

The sector commander emphasized that FRSC personnel maintain constant road presence from Monday through Sunday to enforce traffic regulations and reduce accidents.

“We don’t always go to the road to book people; we also go to the road to play the adversary role as a safety check,” Ibitoye explained. “We also go on advocacy, because there is need for attitudinal change by people.”

The FRSC chief urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to install speed limit devices in their vehicles, highlighting multiple benefits. “The speed limit device will not only regulate the speed, but also extend the lifespan of the vehicle, reduce fuel consumption, and enhance the safety of people on the road,” he stated.

Ibitoye identified speeding as Nigeria’s leading cause of fatal accidents, stressing personal responsibility for road safety. “The major concern is for every motorist and Nigerians to take ownership of the road safety matters; if not, they are endangering their lives and the lives of other road users,” he warned.

Concluding with a safety appeal, the commander advised, “So, value your life and preserve it, and do not expose your life unnecessarily because when you lose it you can not regain it.” The FRSC continues its enforcement and education campaigns to improve compliance with traffic laws across Ondo State.
