A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, on Monday sentenced a 24-year-old Point of Sales operator, Yusuf Olamilekan, to 18 months in prison after he was found guilty of stealing N1 million from his employer.

Presiding over the case, Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Fadairo handed Olamilekan an 18-month jail term, with an option to pay a fine of N60,000.

In addition to the sentence, the court directed the convict to refund the stolen N1 million to his employer, Emeka and Jane Company.

Fadairo stated, “The prosecution counsel had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the convict was guilty of the charge preferred against him.”

Although Olamilekan initially pleaded not guilty, evidence presented in court contradicted his plea.

The prosecutor, Inspector E.O. Adaraloye, informed the court that the offence was committed at about 6 p.m. on April 7 in the Sango-Ota area.

According to Adaraloye, the convict unlawfully accessed his employer’s account and withdrew N1 million without permission, which he used to stake a game of chance.

He added that the defendant lost the entire amount, describing the act as a violation of Section 383 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
