Obi raises alarm over Sokoto insecurity

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the worsening insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, insisting that citizens should not be forced to live under constant fear.

Reacting to recent attacks in Sokoto State, particularly in Borgaja and surrounding communities, Obi described the situation as deeply troubling and a sign of failing governance.

In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor said the reported displacement of residents by armed groups was unacceptable.

“What is happening in Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State is heartbreaking. It reflects a serious breakdown in governance and basic humanity,” Obi said.

He warned that the development suggests that armed non-state actors are gradually assuming the authority of government in affected areas, dictating how people live and where they can stay.

“It is disturbing that Nigerians are now taking directives from terrorists instead of their own government. That is not how any functional nation operates,” he added.

Obi stressed that insecurity in the country has gone beyond a routine challenge and should now be treated as a national emergency.

“This is no longer just about security lapses; it is a national emergency.

The first duty of any government is to protect lives and property. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terror,” he stated.

His comments follow fresh reports of violent attacks along the Sokoto–Zamfara axis.

Residents and security sources say Borgaja has come under repeated assaults in recent months, leading to deaths, abductions, and displacement of villagers.

The development has heightened concerns about the growing influence of armed groups in parts of the region and the need for urgent government intervention to restore order and protect affected communities.
