Obi calls for opposition unity amid Nigeria’s mounting challenges

A former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for stronger collaboration among opposition leaders to address Nigeria’s growing economic and security concerns.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi described the country as being at a critical juncture, citing rising insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and dwindling public confidence in governance as urgent issues requiring collective action.

“The challenges we face—economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust—require more than rhetoric. They require deliberate collaboration, disciplined leadership, and a shared commitment to national progress,” he said.

Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments within opposition circles, following the recent defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress.

Kwankwaso was formally received into the party in Kano by key figures, including the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, alongside other notable opposition leaders.

The development is seen by analysts as part of broader efforts to build a formidable coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi revealed that he visited Kano on Monday at Kwankwaso’s invitation, describing the move as a step toward efforts to “rescue and rebuild” the country. He urged political actors to set aside ethnic, religious, and regional differences in pursuit of national development.

“This is not just about winning elections; it is about rebuilding our institutions, restoring trust in leadership, and securing a better future for all Nigerians,” he stated.

He further stressed that the current situation demands sacrifice, courage, and selflessness from leaders, noting that only a united and purpose-driven opposition can effectively address the nation’s pressing challenges.

Obi also called on Nigerians to prioritise unity and national interest, insisting that coordinated efforts remain key to overcoming the country’s difficulties.
