Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has voiced her dissatisfaction with the current trajectory of Nigeria’s film industry, expressing concerns over what she sees as a growing focus on aesthetics rather than storytelling.

In a conversation with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Akintola reflected on the evolution of Nollywood, noting that the passion that once drove the industry appears to be fading. “Nollywood is no longer driven by passion,” she said, lamenting the shift from substance to superficiality.

She pointed out that today’s film scene is increasingly dominated by an obsession with physical appearance, where makeup, cosmetic surgeries, and body enhancements take precedence over talent and dedication.

Akintola argued that many contemporary actors seem more concerned with glamour than with mastering their craft.

Recalling the early days of Nollywood, she emphasized that the industry was once built on a deep hunger to tell compelling stories. That genuine drive, she believes, is being replaced by a preoccupation with external beauty and image.
