The New Nigeria Peoples Party has rejected allegations made by the former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, suggesting that the ruling All Progressives Congress was responsible for the party’s internal crisis, as well as those of other opposition groups.
El-Rufai had claimed in a viral video that the APC was behind the crises in opposition parties, alleging that certain individuals were contracted to create disturbances and distract party leaderships from their primary responsibilities.
The former governor made these remarks while addressing members of the Social Democratic Party.
In response to these claims, NNPP’s National Chairman, Agbo Major, issued a statement on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, in Lagos, refuting El-Rufai’s accusations. Major emphasized that the party’s challenges stemmed from the personal ambitions of some members, who had violated agreements, party rules, and regulations.
“The crisis in the NNPP began shortly after the 2023 general elections following the termination of a Memorandum of Understanding that formed a temporary alliance between the NNPP, The National Movement (TNM), and the Kwankwassiya Movement,” Major explained in the statement. He also clarified that the origins and progression of the disagreement had been widely covered in various media platforms since 2023.
Major further urged El-Rufai to refrain from commenting on matters concerning NNPP, asserting that the party was not in opposition to any other political group, including the APC. He also described the former governor’s statements as “misguided” and based on information from those opposed to the NNPP’s internal democratic processes.
