The National Inland Waterways Authority has announced an immediate ban on all loading and docking activities from unauthorized points across Nigeria, aiming to curb accidents and improve safety on the country’s inland waterways.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, NIWA Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji said the new directives are designed to prevent avoidable tragedies and enforce compliance among commercial boat operators.
“NIWA has placed an immediate ban on loading activities from all unauthorized points across the country,” Oyebamiji said.
“No commercial passenger boat shall operate from any location other than those officially recognized and registered by NIWA. It is also mandatory for all commercial boats to provide lifejackets and ensure they are used at all times.”
He further added that all unlicensed boats and watercraft, as well as their operators, are now prohibited from operating on Nigeria’s waterways.
The move follows a string of deadly accidents over the past six months, including a capsized boat carrying traders on the Niger River in April and another collision on the Shiroro River in July that left multiple casualties.
More recently, a wooden boat ferrying mourners in Niger State capsized in September, resulting in at least 27 deaths.
“These incidents underscore the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect lives,” Oyebamiji said. “Our aim is to make river travel safer for everyone and prevent further tragedies.”
