NiMet predicts three-day thunderstorms, rainfall nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has projected widespread thunderstorm and rainfall activity across various parts of the country from Monday through Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet indicated that early morning thunderstorms, some accompanied by rain, are expected in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna States in the northern region.

Other northern areas are likely to experience sunny weather interspersed with cloud patches.

Later in the day, more intense thunderstorms and rain showers are predicted over several northern states, including Borno, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Jigawa, and Kaduna.

In the central zone, morning thunderstorms are expected over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, and Plateau States, while other areas will remain mostly sunny with intermittent clouds.

By afternoon and evening, isolated thunderstorms may affect Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, FCT, and parts of Niger State.

Moving south, NiMet foresees cloudy skies in the early hours, with light rain possible in Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

Thunderstorms with light rainfall are forecast for later in the day across the entire southern belt, including states like Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Enugu, Imo, and Anambra.

On Tuesday, most parts of the northern region will witness sunny intervals with cloud patches, though morning thunderstorms are anticipated in areas such as Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna. Afternoon and evening rainfall is also expected in Taraba, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, and Bauchi.

Central states including Kogi, Niger, Benue, and the FCT may experience light morning thunderstorms, while areas such as Nasarawa and Plateau are likely to receive rainfall later in the day.

In the southern region, cloudy morning skies are expected, with rain anticipated in Cross River and Akwa Ibom. Thunderstorms accompanied by light rain will follow in the afternoon across several southern states.

By Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are expected over Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, and other northern states. Heavy rains are predicted in the afternoon across Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Katsina.

The central region will start the day under cloudy skies, transitioning into thunderstorms with moderate rainfall as the day progresses.

Meanwhile, the southern zone will likely experience light rain throughout the day, with thunderstorms expected during peak hours.

NiMet also warned of the possibility of strong winds preceding storms, advising the public to secure loose items to avoid accidents.

It urged motorists to avoid driving in heavy rain and recommended disconnecting electrical appliances during thunderstorms.

The agency advised people to steer clear of tall trees to prevent injuries from falling branches and emphasized the importance of obtaining accurate, location-specific weather updates, particularly for airline operators planning flights during the forecast period.
