The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has projected three days of thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions of the country, beginning Monday, June 2, 2025.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet indicated that several northern states including Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano should expect thunderstorms and rainfall during the morning hours of Monday.

Later in the day, more storms are likely in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

The central region is also expected to experience wet weather. “Morning thunderstorms with rain are likely over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, and Nasarawa,” the report stated. By afternoon and evening, rainfall and thunderstorms are anticipated in Plateau, the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Benue States.

In the South, residents should brace for a mix of cloudy skies and morning rain, particularly in Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. The evening may bring more showers in Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Lagos, Enugu, Anambra, and other southern states.

The forecast continues through Tuesday and Wednesday, with similar weather patterns expected. States in the North such as Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, and Borno will likely experience morning and afternoon thunderstorms, while the North-Central region will see rain over FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Plateau.

The Southern states are expected to remain rainy throughout the week. Morning showers are anticipated in Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Ebonyi, and Cross River on Tuesday and Wednesday, with heavier rain expected later in the day across most of the South.

NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms. “We urge residents to take necessary precautions as strong winds may cause structural damage or flying debris,” the agency advised.

“Disconnect electrical appliances from power sources during storms and avoid standing under trees or other tall structures,” NiMet warned. The agency also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight safety planning.

“We encourage the public to stay informed by regularly checking updates on our official website,” the statement added.

The agency emphasized the importance of preparedness, noting that public safety remains a top priority as weather conditions intensify across the country this week.
