Maritime operators in are facing mounting pressure to align with global environmental regulations as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency steps up enforcement of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, with a strong focus on Annex VI introduced by the International Maritime Organization.

NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized that adherence to the provisions of Annex VI is compulsory for every vessel operating within Nigeria’s territorial waters.

He noted that this move reflects Nigeria’s broader commitment to maritime safety, environmental protection, and harmonization with international standards.

“In line with our statutory mandate under the NIMASA Act 2007 and the Merchant Shipping Act 2007, we have issued a Marine Notice to guide shipowners, charterers, and shipping companies on their obligations.

While we encourage shipping businesses in Nigeria, we remain committed to ensuring that international standards are not compromised,” Mobereola said.
