Nigerian international, Christantus Uche, carried his impressive form from last season into the new campaign, inspiring Getafe to a commanding 2-0 away victory over Celta Vigo in their La Liga opener on Sunday.

The 22-year-old was once again the heartbeat of the Madrid outfit, providing an assist before capping off his performance with a decisive goal.

After a tight first half that ended goalless, Uche wasted little time making his mark. Just two minutes after the restart, the Nigerian international cut back a clever pass into the box for Adrián Liso, who calmly converted to hand Getafe the advantage.

Eighteen minutes from time, Uche turned scorer. Latching onto a long ball, he showed strength and composure, shrugging off two defenders, rounding the goalkeeper, and tucking the ball home to silence the Balaídos crowd while sending the traveling fans into raptures.

A fan favourite in Getafe, Uche was pivotal for the club last term, recording four goals and six assists in 33 league appearances.

His breakout campaign not only triggered speculation of a summer move to the Premier League but also earned him a debut call-up to the Super Eagles during the Unity Cup tournament in May.

As the new season unfolds, both Getafe and Nigeria will be banking on the midfielder to sustain his rich vein of form, with head coach Eric Chelle counting on him ahead of September’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
