Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili made history at the 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday, setting a new world record in the women’s 150m with an astonishing time of 15.85s (2.0m/s) at Piedmont Park, Atlanta in the United States.
The 22-year-old blazed her way into the record books as the first woman ever to dip under the 16-second barrier in the rarely contested event.
She eclipsed the previous best of 16.23s set in 2018 by Bahamian Olympic gold medalist Shaunae Miller-Uibo.
Ofili’s breathtaking performance was the standout moment in what turned out to be a remarkable day for Nigerian athletes at the vibrant, fan-centric street meet that attracted top international competitors.
World record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, clocked 12.53s to place second in her heat behind American Keni Harrison (12.44s), earning a lane in the final later in the evening.
Amusan, who posted 12.74s and 12.66s earlier this season in Xiamen and Keqiao respectively, continues to gain momentum as she sharpens her form ahead of the summer’s major championships.
Meanwhile, Nigerian sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike turned in a season-best effort, clocking 10.20s to secure second place in his 100m heat behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who crossed the line in 10.13s.
Onwuzurike’s time was sufficient to book his place in the final and signals a strong resurgence in his 2025 campaign.
The Adidas Atlanta City Games stands out as a high-energy, open-air athletics showcase held outside traditional stadiums, offering fans an up-close and electrifying view of elite competition.
