Nigeria fans celebrate South Africa’s W’Cup exit after Canada heartbreak

South Africa’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup triggered widespread reactions across Nigerian social media, with many football fans reveling in Bafana Bafana’s dramatic defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.

A late strike from Stephen Eustáquio handed Canada a 1-0 victory at Los Angeles Stadium, bringing an end to South Africa’s impressive World Cup journey.

The result also saw Bafana Bafana become the first African side to exit the tournament at the knockout stage after a record nine teams from the continent advanced to the Round of 32.

Although several supporters across Africa had rallied behind South Africa ahead of the encounter, many Nigerians took a different stance, reigniting the familiar online rivalry that has existed between fans of both nations for years.

For much of the contest, South Africa matched Canada stride for stride, frustrating the North Americans with disciplined defending and organised play.

Bafana Bafana fashioned a number of dangerous opportunities in the first half but failed to convert their promising moves into goals.

At the other end, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced key saves while defender Aubrey Modiba made a vital goal-line clearance to keep South Africa in contention.

With extra time seemingly moments away, Eustáquio seized on a loose ball at the edge of the box and fired a low effort beyond Williams in stoppage time, sealing Canada’s passage into the Round of 16.

The Canadians will now meet either the Netherlands or Morocco in the next round.

Reactions pour in
Shortly after the match ended, Nigerian sports journalist Pooja, who is covering the tournament in the United States, posted a message that quickly went viral.

“South Africa returns home to secure their jobs,” @PoojaMedia wrote.

He later followed up with another post, writing, “South Africa are going home to protect their jobs 🔥,” @PoojaMedia added.

The remarks attracted significant engagement online, prompting a flood of responses from football fans.

Before kick-off, user @Lea_EFC observed Africa’s support for South Africa, posting, “Appears the whole of Africa is supporting South Africa against Canada tonight 😭”

Following the final whistle, football satire account @TrollFootball mocked the situation, writing, “You can only celebrate your country’s goals. Africans celebrating Canada’s 92nd-minute winner against South Africa.”

Another user, @Nsukka_okpa, took aim at South Africa’s tournament record, stating, “South Africa came to the World Cup only to break records: First team to concede a goal. First team to get two red cards in one game. First team to lose a match. First team knocked out of the Round of 32. Gbafanaaa Gbafanaaa! Pack your bags and go back to your country.”

Senegalese supporter @frajatta92 expressed sympathy despite not backing Bafana Bafana.

“Painful exit for South Africa. I wasn’t rooting for them, but to go out that way is heartbreaking. The positive side is they can now go home and protect their jobs.”

User @Priceless_MCI echoed a similar sentiment, writing, “South Africa have returned home to secure their jobs.”

Meanwhile, @Kingcrypto98985 highlighted what he considered an unwanted collection of records.

“First team to lose in World Cup 2026 – South Africa. First team to get a red card – South Africa. First team to go home in the first knockout round – South Africa.”

Banter continues online

The online exchanges continued long after the match, with more fans weighing in on South Africa’s exit.

User @tygarii posted, “I’ve had many unsuccessful hate watches involving South Africa. But there’s a saying that for every 2014, there’s a 2022. Morocco, you’re next. I will have my 2022.”

Another supporter, @serialwinnar, thanked Canada for ending Bafana Bafana’s campaign.

“On behalf of all the countries in Africa, thank you Canada for sending South Africa home to keep their jobs.”

User @Guccistarboi also joined the conversation, posting, “I speak on behalf of all African countries. We are happy, aren’t we?”

Elsewhere, @SirChucho reacted with song lyrics, writing, “No matter where you go… remember that road that will lead you home.”

User @gtagmemes simply posted, “Delay is not denial.”

@RaymondChris100 added, “Prayer answered. Now they can go home and take care of their sisters and jobs.”

The reactions underscored the enduring rivalry between Nigerian and South African football supporters, with many comments drawing on years of online exchanges, immigration-related debates and sporting banter between fans from both countries.
