Nigeria extradites fugitive to UK over murder, drug trafficking charges

The Nigeria Police Force has extradited a suspected fugitive, Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi, to the United Kingdom to face charges related to alleged murder and drug trafficking offences.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon, the extradition was carried out through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, following a formal request by UK authorities in September 2024.

Police said Adebiyi is wanted in connection with the alleged murder of Joshua Boadu, which reportedly occurred on June 18, 2018, in the United Kingdom.

He is also accused of involvement in the supply of crack cocaine, classified as a Class-A controlled substance, between October 2017 and March 2018.

The suspect was arrested in Nigeria on January 23, 2025, by INTERPOL operatives, after which legal proceedings for his extradition commenced at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Justice A.O. Faji of the Federal High Court, Lagos Division, granted the application for his extradition on February 16, 2026, in line with provisions of Nigeria’s Extradition Act.

Following the court’s approval and the completion of necessary documentation, Adebiyi was handed over to UK law enforcement officials on April 14, 2026, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to international collaboration in tackling crime.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in strengthening partnerships with global law enforcement agencies to ensure that fugitives do not find safe haven within our borders,” the IGP said.

He added that the extradition demonstrates the Force’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and supporting cross-border justice.

The police noted that the operation reflects ongoing efforts to improve cooperation between Nigeria and international partners in combating transnational crimes.
