Councillors of Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State have suspended their chairman, Aminu Ladan, from office over allegations of constitutional violations and misconduct.

The suspension, which took effect on Monday, was approved by eight of the ten councillors in the legislative council.

The two dissenting councillors—Majority Leader Ibrahim Isah Gommna (Minna South Ward) and Mohammed Mohammed (Nasarawa Ward)—declined to sign the suspension resolution.

This development follows Ladan’s recent legal action against the Niger State Government and four others at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he sought enforcement of a Supreme Court judgment on local government funding and tenure. The case was referred last Friday to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for assignment to a vacation judge.

In a suspension letter obtained by our correspondent in Minna, the councillors leveled multiple allegations against Ladan, including: Gross misconduct and mismanagement of council resources; Failure to present mandatory income and expenditure statements to the legislative council; Violation of due process in land sales within the council jurisdiction; Illegal award of contracts; General incompetence and disregard for rule of law; Failure to constitute the statutory Finance and General Purposes Committee.

The councillors confirmed they have notified the Niger State House of Assembly about their decision and have given Ladan five days to submit a written response to the allegations.
