Former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has characterized the devastating Mokwa flood, which claimed nearly 200 lives, as a tragic act of divine will.
Breaking his silence on the disaster, Babangida urged Niger State residents to use the Eid-El-Kabir celebrations to pray for the departed souls and protection of survivors.
The elder statesman shared his condolences during a visit by a state government delegation led by Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba to his Minna residence for traditional Salah homage.
“What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate but it is ordained by Allah. It is beyond our powers and this is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased,” Babangida stated.
The former leader praised Governor Umaru Bago’s administration for its developmental initiatives, encouraging continuity while pledging his ongoing support. Deputy Governor Garba explained the visit sought Babangida’s guidance and blessings, acknowledging his distress over the tragedy.
“We are aware that the General is disturbed by the recent incident in Mokwa and all we need from all and sundry is prayers and we will also appreciate your fatherly role at all times especially at this trying period,” Garba said.
He added, “The people of Niger State and Nigeria in general are appreciative of your diligent service to the country and we assure you that the State Government will not fail you as you remain a pillar of hope for the Nation.”
Separately, Governor Bago has appealed to citizens to intensify prayers for Niger State and Nigeria’s peace and progress. The call comes as flood-affected communities continue recovery efforts following one of the state’s worst natural disasters in recent years.
