The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood that recently struck Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, leading to the loss of at least 21 lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

In a statement released on Friday, NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, extended the forum’s heartfelt condolences to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, the government, and the people of Niger State.

“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum stands in solidarity with the government and people of Niger State on the devastating flood that has wreaked havoc in Mokwa town,” AbdulRazaq said. “We are deeply shocked by the scale of destruction, especially the loss of lives and valuable properties.”

Governor AbdulRazaq commended the prompt response by the Niger State Government and the efforts of emergency responders in providing relief to affected families.

“We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and acknowledge the interventions made by the state government in coordination with emergency agencies,” he said.

Highlighting the broader implications of the disaster, AbdulRazaq noted that such tragedies underscore the urgent need to tackle climate change and improve disaster preparedness.

“This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and its impact on our communities,” he added. “As leaders, we reaffirm our commitment to collaborate with the Office of the National Security Adviser and the National Emergency Management Agency to enhance disaster mitigation and strengthen relief institutions.”

He concluded with a message of hope and unity: “We pray for comfort for all families who lost loved ones and encourage citizens to support ongoing efforts to help victims and reduce the long-term impact of such disasters.”
