Newcastle eye Southampton’s goalie Ramsdale

Newcastle United have entered discussions with Southampton over a potential deal to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

talkSPORT reported that the 27-year-old could be on the move just a year after joining the Saints from Arsenal, following their drop to the Championship.

This would mark yet another chapter in Ramsdale’s turbulent career, with relegation scars already from previous spells at Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Despite those setbacks, Ramsdale’s quality and Premier League experience remain in demand, with the Magpies keen to hand the England international a fresh start in the top flight.

Sources indicated that Ramsdale is enthusiastic about the prospect of joining Newcastle and has already turned down an offer from Sunderland earlier in the transfer window, a decision likely to delight fans on Tyneside given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Ramsdale comes after they failed in their attempt to land Burnley’s James Trafford.

Manager Eddie Howe had earmarked the young goalkeeper as his preferred choice to challenge Nick Pope for the number one spot, but Trafford opted for a return to Manchester City in a £27 million switch.

With that door closed, the Magpies are weighing up whether to sign Ramsdale on a permanent basis or on loan, as they look to reinforce their goalkeeping department ahead of the new season.
