Newly appointed Poland national team manager, Jan Urban, has criticized his predecessor, Michal Probierz, for removing Robert Lewandowski as team captain, a decision he believes played a role in the star striker’s international retirement.
Lewandowski, 36, announced his retirement from international football earlier this year after being stripped of the captain’s armband by Probierz.
Following Probierz’s departure, Urban has stepped into the role with hopes of mending the strained relationship with the veteran forward, widely regarded as Poland’s greatest footballer.
“For me, Lewandowski is a striker who, if you create a chance for him, will do his job perfectly. In my opinion, Probierz, the former manager, made a mistake by taking away the captain’s armband,” Urban told TribalFootball.
“Robert is a very important figure for our national team. Age? Sorry, but the numbers he’s putting up are excellent, and he’s doing it in the Spanish league, not in Saudi Arabia.”
Despite his age, Lewandowski continues to deliver world-class performances, finishing last season with 42 goals and three assists in 52 appearances for Barcelona.
