NDLEA unearths drug caves, tunnels in Kano

The Kano State Strategic Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has uncovered a network of caves and underground tunnels allegedly used as hideouts for illicit drug activities in the Rimin Kebe area.

The development was disclosed in a statement released on Wednesday in Kano by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari.

According to the statement, the discovery was made during “Operation Sharar Mafaka,” an intensified campaign targeting drug-related offences across the state.

Muhammad-Maigatari quoted the State Commander, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, as saying the breakthrough followed credible intelligence and a period of sustained surveillance.

He explained that operatives raided the Rimin Kebe enclave on May 4, where they uncovered several caves that had been constructed and modified into living quarters and operational bases by suspected drug traffickers.

Items such as mats, pillows, food flasks, plates, and cutlery were found inside the caves, suggesting they were regularly occupied and used for organised drug activities.

“Other caves and tunnels observed appear to be under construction and may provide underground links between hideouts,” he said.

The commander revealed that a number of the structures had already been dismantled, while efforts were ongoing to demolish and secure the remaining ones.

He added that the operation forms part of a broader strategy to eliminate drug abuse and trafficking in Kano State.

“We will continue to pursue these unscrupulous elements wherever they hide.

“Our commitment is unwavering. Those who remain in the illicit trade should consider exiting now. We have come to stay until Kano is free from illicit drug use and trade,” Yahaya-Lawal said.

Yahaya-Lawal further noted that the operation was in line with the directive of the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba-Marwa, to dismantle drug networks nationwide.

He also called on residents to assist the agency by reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest NDLEA office, stressing that prompt information is key to tackling substance abuse in the state.
